The correct bite and the important role of the position of the temporomandibular joint
The topic of functional diagnostics is more topical than ever
Whether to comply with forensic regulations, to successfully identify and treat CMD patients or for our own quality assurance, functional diagnostics is an important prerequisite prior to the fabrication of new dentures and an essential part of the dental service portfolio.
The figures speak for themselves: around 10% of the population are affected by misalignments of the temporomandibular joints, including many headache patients. According to a neurologist from Essen in the “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung”, 85% of headache patients suffer from misaligned jaws and CMD (Dr. Gerhard in: WAZ, 2008).

Thinking in a closed loop
A natural principle
A pain does not always have to have its cause where it hurts, as the human being is a unit. So it often happens that the origin is to be found somewhere completely different than the location of the pain.
The masticatory muscles form a functional unit with the cervical spine and the short neck muscles connected to it. This is why the “wrong bite” is associated with symptoms that extend beyond the head area. Massages, injections and painkillers may provide some relief, but they do not cure the actual cause. Muscular discomfort and pain in the neck and shoulder area can be an expression of a so-called “myoarthropathy” of the masticatory system.
Typical complaints associated with this type of myoarthropathy are:
_ Tension headaches
_ Tension in the neck and back muscles
_ Pain in the temporomandibular joints
_ Cracking/grinding of the temporomandibular joints
_ Functional pelvic obliquity
Other complaints can also be caused by a “wrong bite”, e.g.:
_ Migraine
_ Earache or tinnitus
_ Dizziness
It is possible to diagnose the bite and, if necessary, correct an incorrect bite.
The functional prophylaxis for every dental practice
What the dental practice needs is a basis for safe and fast functional diagnostics that can be used as a matter of course for every patient.
Precise lower jaw positioning through digital bite adjustment
If a functional disorder is suspected – especially after a clinical functional analysis – dentists obtain definitive clarity about the individual situation of the craniomandibular system through further instrumental analysis. The centric condylar position, which is considered ideal for smooth functioning of the temporomandibular joint, is also determined.
This is why the DIR® concept is so successful
Digital functional prophylaxis – simple and safe
Digital bite registration – for perfect prosthetics without grinding
Treatment safety – through scientific studies
Transparent results – for exact position data of the UK
Measured DIR® splint –
with effectiveness and function
